How To Apply for An Australian Student Visa

Requirements For An Australia Study Visa 

Apply To University & Get Confirmation Of Enrolment

Before applying for a visa to study in Australia and even other European countries, you need an acceptance letter from a university in the country. When you get accepted by the school and have paid a deposit of your tuition fees, you will be sent a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) which you need to start your visa application 

Check for The Type of Visa You Need

There are different types of Australian student visas covering different aspects of studying in Australia like taking up a full-time course, doing some practical training, or accompanying a student to Australia.

The different types of of student visa include:

  • Student Visa (Subclass 500)- This visa will allow you to take up a full-time course in Australia, work part-time, and live there for up to 5 years.
  • Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)- If you want to support an under 18, you will need to apply for this visa.
  • Training Visa (Subclass 407)- This visa allows you to do work-based training. You will participate in classroom-based professional development training and be allowed to stay in Australia for up to 2 years.

Lastly, if you are looking to study in Australia for just three to four months, apply for a visitor visa or a working holiday visa.

Get Your Documents Ready 

To start your student visa application to Australia, you need to have all your documents ready. Below is a list of documents you will need;

  • A copy of your passport along with your birth certificate, national identity card, or driver’s license.
  • Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE)
  • Evidence of health insurance 
  • Proof of funds (must cover your tuition, travel, and living expenses for  12 months. Also, an evidence that your parents have AUD 62,222).
  • English proficiency test certificate 
  • A statement that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily along with your transcript, degree certificate, and statement letter from the university that admitted you.
  • Criminal record verification results 

Complete The Application Online

If you are applying for a student visa subclass 500, your application needs to be done 124 days before your course start date according to the CoE. You can apply online, but you should click here and carefully read the instructions.

You will need to fill in your nationality, and your CoE code, and choose your educational sector (e.g ELICOS for language courses or Higher education for a course that leads to a University degree). You will also be asked to submit details about your family, health, and criminal record. You will also be asked to answer a few questions about your education and work experience. 

Pay The Visa Fee and Get a TRN Number

After you complete your online application, you will be asked to pay a fee of about 575 AUD (Read more about payment here). When you are done making the payment you get a receipt with a TRN number (Transaction Reference Number). Make sure to save it, so you can always check your application status.

Health Checkup and Interview

After application, you might have to do a health checkup or interview. You will receive this information about this when you complete the application above if it applies to you. It is advisable to do this after your online application and not before, as you need your TRN number and instructions on what you need to check. 

Get Your Student Visa

Normally it takes a few weeks to get your visa, but the length of time depends on where you are applying from or how busy the Immigration authorities in your country are.  When your visa is ready, you will get notified through mail, but you can always check your visa status online. 

Lastly, your visa is electronic, but if you want physical proof, you can print the grant letter online once your visa is approved.
